David Beckemeyer on VoIP

»

David Beckemeyer gave a very good argument why AT&T, Qwest, etc VoIP announcements are lame, with easy to understand illustration that a layman could easily understand.

Having VoIP on the last mile but still retain PSTN on the core network isn’t really VoIP (IP Telephony). It is the same service, same model, just different (last mile) technology. “IP Telephony” isn’t bussword people will jump upon. Lowering the cost to compete with providers like Vonage is only a reaction to competitions, not really innovation and unlikely to be substainable in the long run. Obviously, most of the telcos don’t get it yet.

Day 2 in Dubai

»

Jetlagged, I woke up in the middle of the night and couldn’t sleep. So I went down to the seminar room to use the wireless and catching up with my blogroll. By the time people comes walking into the room, I am already worned out which is kind of bad since I have to a morning presentation. I hope I didn’t do too badly and I am glad a handful here have expressed interest to assist on the IDN-OSS project. Thank you! :-)

After lunch, I went to catch a quick nap to recoup but that does not seem to help much. By nightfall, I was worned out again which is kind of a pity. You see, dinner was hosted by Etisalat on a crusis on the gulf and I spend half of the time on the deck sleeping :P

Day 1 in Dubai

»

Took an overnight flight from Singapore and arrived in Dubai 7am in the morning. To my surprise, Taj Palace Hotel provided a transport to fetch me from the airport even though it is only about 5mins away.

Checking in is unfortunately not that pleasant. They have a room reserved for me since last yesterday but they don’t have a room for me when I check in. Luckily, I met an old friend, Teresa Swinehart who is the counsel for ICANN so we spend an hour catching up in the lounge while I wait for my room. Teresa also just fly in from WSIS in Geneva. (I believe things is in good hand and under control there :-)

Availablity of IPv4 addresses

»

Paul Wilson (APNIC) just gave the presentation on the behalf of Geoff Huston at Dubai RIPE-NCC meeting here. The research is sponsored by APNIC and the answer, well, you know what to expect from Geoff.

By considerating (a) the rate of IANA allocation (b) the rate of RIRs allocation (c) BGP tables on allocated but unused address (d) IPv4 address holded by RIRs, Geoff did two projection.

The first projection is based on an exponential growth of IPv4 addresses and he conclude that IANA will run out of IPv4 in 2020, RIRs in 2022 and we can continue until 2028 (with allocated by unused addresses).

The second projection based on straight line growth, he conclude that IANA will run out of IPv4 in 2034 and RIRs in 2037.

DABL – PonG

» ,

I haven’t been blogging because I have been spending almost all my free time working on a Distributed Address Book List (DABL) which I called PonG. (Download)

PonG is a tool which allows you and your friends to keep up-to-date (contact) information of each another.

PonG package includes a PonG server and a PonG client.

You keep your personal profile information on your PonG server and define which friends can access what information.

Your friends will use their PonG clients to communicate with your PonG server and keep their address book up-to-date.

If you try this software, would appreciate if you leave a comment or a trackback.

Incidently, my PonG URL http://james.seng.sg/pong/xmlrpc.php. If you want a customized userid/passwd, drop me an email. (Use PonG client to get my email). (I know we need autodiscovery…that will be in the next version, I promise)

Suggestions and Feedbacks are welcome.

* DABL is coined by Ross M Karchner after brainstorm session on #joiito.

* Update 4th Dec : Just release version 1.0 which includes a varity of performance improvement and features. See Changelog for more details.
