Why I do Tomorrow?

»

I wanted to blog this some time ago but now that Tomorrow.sg is on the Straits Time and there is a conspiracy theory about Tomorrow.sg, its time for me to step out to clear the air.

First of all, to the “conspiracy theorist(s)”, about bloody time someone discover the SGNIC whois record! Where have you been, my friend? My involvement in Tomorrow.sg was never a secret.

Now, is this an IDA thing? Hell no! As SGNIC whois record shows, it is registered to me personally. My boss in IDA is aware of it, but note it is “aware” not approve or disapprove, just merely aware. In other word, I screwed up, I am on my own. He is fancinated by all these Social Software and had given me a lot of leeways to indulge in this blogging stuff and I thank him for that.

Singapore CEO blog

»

Over the weekend, I learnt that the CEO of NTUC Income Tan Kin Lian actually have a blog. While I won’t say he got “it” (putting his press statement online is hardly blogging), but it is definately a start.

Hope to see more CEO in Singapore blogging :-)

And by the way, calling your journalists bloggers and changing your name of your website to call it a Electric Blog don’t make it a blog – it is just a name change from ‘Newspaper’. (See Cowboy Caleb)

Henry Sinnreich joins Pulver

»

Henry finally announced this, to put the rumours to rest :-) (via Richard Stantsy)

I have started last week my new job at Pulver.com in the hope to contribute to SIP not being replaced by Skype and maybe we can also do something to interconnect all the SIP islands using URIs for IP-IP instead of phone numbers and the PSTN.

For those who don’t know, Henry is also known as ‘Grandfather of SIP’ having been involved in all-things-SIP in IETF from the very beginning. Good luck Henry.

ps: I notice quite a few people have jumpship from MCI. I won’t be surprised more …

Will Overlay Network be the next End-to-End paradigm?

»

I met fellow technologist from a major handphone manufacturer several of weeks ago. We have a long and interesting conversation but one thing stick out even now on my mind. It goes some thing like this:

Him: We forsee our phones will evolve into an all-IP device, one that hooks up not only to GSM, 3G, but also wifi, wimax etc.

Me: That nice. So what’s your plan on IPv6?

Him: No, we have no plan on IPv6?

Me: (privately: Huh?) Why?

Him: Overlay Network.

Now, I am a believer in End-to-End and to me, as IP profilterate to every known devices, eventually we will run out of IPv4 so migration to IPv6 is a question of when not why.

But before this conversation, I never considered overlay network as a competitor to IPv6. In someways, it is even ridiculous, an irony considered IP is designed to be preciesly an “overlay network” over the array of telcos infrastructure of ATM, leaseline, dialup etc. So why would you want to put an overlay network over an overlay network?1

Assumption: Bandwidth + CPU = 0

»

On DSL Prime (via Canarie)

In a decision that is changing the future of the internet, Google has told employees to move forward on the assumption that bandwidth and server costs will rapidly approach zero. That’s a revolutionary development, whose importance is being evaluated on Wall Street and in the press in several articles you’ll read next week.

Now, that’s a powerful assumption: Bandwidth + CPU = 0. Go imaging what you can do with that…I could think of a lot (yea! unlimited porn!) but I love to hear what others have to say on this also.

The Way Forward for Anti-Spam

»

I am now at MCMC for a discussion on Anti-Spam Strategies – The way forward for ASEAN Telecommunications Regulators’ Council (ATRC). Lots of people are here: OCED, ITU, FTC, various regulators from the region and also industry. But I think this is a close-door event so I couldn’t blog much what was discussed here.

Anyway, coming to MCMC in Cyberjaya is a challenge – even the Taxi driver couldn’t find the way here – so I end up a bit late but in time for my presentation in the morning. I think I did pretty well1 judging from the responses I got from the audience. Oh, one thing I could share tho – during my Q&A, someone asked me to explain blog spam; I started with ‘Well, Malaysian would know blog, thanks to Jeff Ooi …’ and I heard chuckles around the room. Yes, everyone read Jeff ;-)

This is my first time in MCMC new building and I actually met (and have lunch) with the Chairman of MCMC this time. It is also nice to catch up with friends from MCMC … more tea tarik later. ;-)

1 I learned something today: I do well in presentation, I sux on camera and interview. Ah, got to figure out how to improve in those areas…

Going to KL

»

I tried to ground myself last month (April) so I can do some catch up with daywork in office. One month passed and the inbox is still a piled of work. I wasn’t very successful in grounding myself either having ended up doing two short trip last month.

So I cancelled my trip to Internet2 meeting this week, hoping I could get some more work done this week before my China trip. Just as I cancelled my trip on last Friday morning (and also a few meetings in Internet2), office told me to make a quick trip up to KL today.

*sigh* Anyway, it is a short trip and I should be back on Wednesday. I still got a few more days to catch up with work. And I am taking bus (Aeroline again) this time :-) Not only it is cheaper, it is probably faster then taking plane.
