The Maverick & The Elegant Universe

The Maverick and His Machine by Kevin Maney

The Elegant Universe by Brian Greene

Bought these two books before dinner just after golf (Gosh, I havent play Golf for 7 months now..I am surprise I can still hit the ball! :-)

The Maverick is a book about Thomas Waston (Sr) and how he remake IBM. Thomas is well-known for not just encouraging mavericks (aka “birds who refuse to fly in line”) but also promote and use them well during his time. Those days (not-so-co-incidently) also happened to be the brightest days of IBM.

The Elegant Universe is a layman book on T.O.E (The Theory of Everything) aka Superstring Theory. I would have become a Physicist if computer hasn’t been invented.

Innovator’s Dilemma

The Innovator’s Dilemma by Clayton M. Christensen.

Actually, not a new book but I digged out from my closet and re-read it last week for some internal presentations. Highly recommended for someone who is interested in technology trends.

Incidently, in the course of doing research for my presentation, I also come across this article The Myth of Disruptive Technology by John Dvorak (via Orkut’s Disruptive Technologies Community).

The Future of Work

The Future of Work by Thomas W. Malone

Thomas distributed some of his book after his keynote speech at Supernova 2004. I like his speech and I am sure I will enjoy his book too.

Pick this up in the Singapore Airport on my way to SFO. I flip through it briefly and really like what I saw!

Nemesis by Issac Asimov

Yep, not a book on technology, business or management!

And not bought recently either…Lets see, the receipt shows I bought this on 26th July 1999 from Kepler’s Book @ 1010 El Camino Real in Menlo Park. Wow, thats a book I bought in two previous life ago.

Anyway, Issac Asimov is my fav author ever since I was a kid. I read almost all his Foundation and Robot stories and could describe his Three Laws of Robotics and its philisophy to anyone anytime.

With thousands of short stories credited to his name, I remember driving around El Camino Real, looking for those really old second bookstores and stay there for hours, hunting for his short stories and sometimes buying the whole book for the sake of one of his story. It become some sort of pasttime when I was there.
