Day 2 in Korea

» , ,

Catch up with many people today and really glad I can make it. APSTAR Retreat was really interesting especially the discussion of IP Telephony presentations from Japan, Korea and Thailand.

When MPHPT agrees to open 050-XXXX-XXXX for IP Telephony for at least Class C licensee last year, that was a bold step. By the end of 2002, they have 2.27M IP telephony subscribers by and it is projected to increase to 22.73M by 2007! That is 60% compounded growth year to year.

Korea (KISDI) was particually candid that all new technologies goes through a few phase: (1) Denial (2) Delay (3) De-credit (4) Acceptence (5) Promotion. And Korea is probably in stage 3-4 in IP Telephony.

The other interesting topic is the discussion of Internet History Museum. Boy, folks here goes back to 1960s … which reminded how young and how small I am. I have a long way to go…

I also made an appeal to the AP leaders to make sure IETF Seoul next year would be a success or else it would be difficult for IETF management to hold more of the meetings outside US. Harald’s target is to get >1700 people to IETF Seoul…hopefully that would not hurt APRICOT 2004 which is held one week before IETF Seoul…

Lunch with Tommi Matsutomo (President for AT&T Japan) which we always do whenever we meet in these conferences. Tommi is going to chair the APNG for the next two years and asked me to join the APNG board.

Dinner with APNG Camp folks and glad to see so many young people participating in AP events. Wish I could bring more Singaporean to APNG.

And yes, I finally have Korean food in Korea :-)

Day 2 in Korea: Meeting 2, Presentation 2, Sightseeing? 0.

[Yes, yes yes. I know the hotel is just beside the most beautiful beach in Korea. I can see that from my room. But sand, sorry, havent touch it yet]

Day 1 in Korea

» ,

Took a red-eye (overnight) flight from Singapore to Seoul. I arrived intact in Seoul at 7:30am thinking I have sufficient time before my 9am meeting.

Well, not knowing Hotel Lotte-Jamsil is 1hour away by cab, I took the cab and it cost 90,000WON (90USD)! *sigh* [Incidently, when the cab driver tells you “No English”, speaking s.l.o.w.e.r in English does not help]

Sobig.F

»

Around lunch time, my mailbox started to get filled up with Sobig.F worm from some guy in Australia [137.111.130.103] (Macquarie University?). At the rate of 1-2 email per minute, I have receive over 200+ from him alone in the last 2 hrs. If one person can do that much damage, imaging 1/2 a million…

I also found an analysis of SoBig.F worm which is very interesting. This is a very evasive worm written by very competent programmer.

The worm will create open mail relay for spammers and install keylogger to trap id/passwd for internet banking among other things. The seeding of the virus is done via spamming and then spread to others.

We could conclude this is a work of some underground group who is involving in spamming, bank frauds, etc..a pure commerical venture. This is quite different from the old days where crackers wrote viruses & worms are written for the fun of it.

Folks, welcome to the New Age War!

how unfair…

»

One often hears about how unfair that senior management is highly paid compared to the “folks slaving below”. For those who havent accept the reality of life, let me offer this:

“If you think good management is expensive, then try bad.” – (I forgot who said this…)

Online games

»

Following my blogging of “What I learnt from games”, I have been thinking of writing an online game which build on the concept of this. Perhaps it could be something of a management game where you pits your skills against other managers in a ruthless captalisam society. It might be an interesting simulation game.

Oh yea, for those who don’t know, I have been writing online games for over 10 years as a hobby. You can check out my game at http://hotl.pagn.net/.

DMCA for Singapore?

»

If you havent heard of DMCA, you probably should! With the US-SG FTA coming into effect next year, DMCA will come to Singapore.

DMCA is one of the harshest copyright legistration. Basically, it outlaws any attempts to break any copyright protection. But it provides exceptions such as “scientific exploration”.

Nevertheless, SDMI/RIAA has attempt to use it to stop Edward Felten from publishing his findings on the faults of SDMI, despite he is doing so under the open challenge from SDMI. Or Adobe using it to arrest a russian cryptographer who has break their Ebook technology.

Or recently, RIAA has been using DMCA to subponea ISPs to release informations about users who use file sharing software which causes some ISPs to countersue RIAA for their strongarm tactics.

And today, I learnt that ESA lawyers send a warning letter to gentoo because their automated engine found a file “/distfiles/INFMapPacks123FULL-MAN.zip, picked out the words “Pac” and “Man” and conclude infringement of “Pacman”!

No doubt copyright is important but DMCA is outright abusive…

sigh…

»

dunno why…dont feel good today. perhaps too stressed out…i guess thats happens when you have 3 meetings before lunch, skip lunch to have a board conference call, and follow up a storm of emails and papers to follow up until the end of day.

I also feel quite bad that I probably wont be able to go to Seoul next week for APIA…I am going to miss the strategy meeting, stuff in Seoul/Busan, other then APRICOT, APAN, AP* and also Anti-spam stuff.

but hey, life goes up and goes down. I am down today and I will be up tomorrow. ;-)
